At Gallery MAR, we believe that water is more than a subject—it’s a sensation. In our latest exhibition, “By the Water, Of the Water,” artists T.S. Harris and Shawna Moore explore the many moods of water: its shimmer and stillness, its lightness and depth, its pull toward memory and emotion. Inspired by this new show, we’re diving into artworks that channel the spirit of water, whether through fluid abstraction, sunlit swimmers, or translucent layers that echo the movement of tides.
In this installment of our “Picture This“ blog series, we celebrate artworks that evoke the essence of water and its enduring allure. These pieces invite a sense of ease and openness—reflecting water’s ability to soothe, energize, and transform. Using the magic of Photoshop, we reimagine how these water-inspired works might live within your home, bringing a breath of serenity and flow to your everyday spaces.

Left to Right: James Wolanin, “Beach Chair,” acrylic, 50″ x 42″ | T.S. Harris, “Swimmer in Bubbles,” oil, 72″ x 48″
In this breezy foyer, two striking water-themed works bring a sense of movement and memory to the space. James Wolanin’s beachside beauty—sun-drenched and stylish—sets the tone with a subtle seaside backdrop, where the suggestion of water anchors the scene in a summery stillness. In contrast, T.S. Harris’s immersive underwater portrait surrounds its synchronized swimmer in bright, crystalline blues, capturing the full-body sensation of being enveloped by water. As part of her recent exhibition “By the Water, Of the Water,” with Shawna Moore, Harris continues to explore water as both subject and experience—blurring the line between figure and fluid. Together, the pieces balance surface and depth, nostalgia and now—each offering a different expression of water’s visual allure.

Shawna Moore, “Dream Time,” encaustic, 30″ x 60″
Mounted on this textured stone wall, Shawna Moore’s long horizonal encaustic painting becomes a luminous horizon of its own—echoing the rhythm of water through layered ripples of aqua, green, and golden ochre. The waxy surface catches the light, creating a quiet shimmer that shifts throughout the day, much like sunlight dancing on a lake. Part of her recent exhibition “By the Water, Of the Water“ with T.S. Harris, the piece distills the essence of water into pure abstraction, inviting a sense of stillness and flow.

Jared & Nicole Davis, “Riverway Series – Strawberry Reservoir, Utah,” glass, 15″ x 15″ x 5″
Perched atop this modern credenza, Jared & Nicole Davis’ glass work “Riverway Series – Strawberry Reservoir, Utah“ flows like a luminous current through this bright space. A vivid streak of turquoise glass winds through the sculptural form, evoking an aerial view of water cutting through land—fluid, vibrant, and alive. The contrast between the smooth, radiant channel and the rougher surrounding textures mirrors the dynamic interplay of nature, distilling the essence of a riverway into striking, abstract form.

Shawna Moore, “Sea Glass,” encaustic, 45″ x 45″
In this sage green and white bedroom, Shawna Moore’s “Sea Glass” glows with a serene, watery light—its soft layers of emerald and turquoise drifting across the surface like gentle ripples on a calm sea. The encaustic medium lends a luminous depth, as if the painting itself holds the memory of water. Featured in her latest exhibition “By the Water, Of the Water” with T.S. Harris, this piece captures the quiet clarity of water in motion, offering a soothing focal point that anchors the space in calm.

T.S. Harris, “Overlooking the Sea,” oil, 40″ x 40″
T.S. Harris’s “Overlooking the Sea” commands attention with its cinematic stillness and sunlit palette above this modern fireplace. The poised figure on the diving board gazes out over a vast expanse of ocean, the water rendered in luminous blues that stretch endlessly toward the horizon. Part of Harris’s recent exhibition “By the Water, Of the Water” with Shawna Moore, the painting captures both the promise and pause of water—a suspended moment where elegance meets the unknown.

Fred Calleri, “Rising Tide,” oil, 30″ x 40″
Fred Calleri’s “Rising Tide” brings a playful elegance to the space above the modern fireplace, with its vintage-inspired figure lounging seaside in bold red. The backdrop—a soft, painterly beachscape—evokes the breezy charm of the Western coast, with hints of the golden cliffs and cool waters reminiscent of Carmel-by-the-Sea, home to Gallery MAR Carmel. The ocean is depicted subtly and peacefully, grounding the scene in a sense of leisure, nostalgia, and timeless coastal beauty.
