A selfie with Hunt Slonem and Maren Mullin
On a beautiful spring night in Carmel-by-the-Sea, we welcomed the illustrious artist Hunt Slonem for a meet and greet, a viewing of fresh new works, and book signing. This time with Hunt Slonem was one for the books — and he signed nearly one hundred of them for our lucky guests and collectors.

The day began with a welcome to the artist at his hotel. I met him there and took him to lunch at an unexpected yet delightful spot: Aw Shucks for fried oysters and ice tea. Fortified and caffeinated, we made our way to Gallery MAR Carmel for Slonem’s book signing, followed by a Q & A with gallery owner Thomas Cushman. Slonem answered each query eloquently, and even gave some encouraging advice to artists in attendance: “just keep going, it’s not always inspiring,” as well as thoughtful responses about the history of his work and his first bunny sightings in his paintings.

He shared stories of acquiring his homes and estates, details on his cardinal bird and forest series (one of my personal favorites!) and received a standing ovation after this stdio manager regaled us all with stories of what studio life is like for Slonem. Says studio manager Eric Firestone, “He is the hardest working person I know.”

My favorite quote of the afternoon? “While I enjoy decorating my houses, and the fabrics and gifts, and he sculpture shows… the only time when I feel 100% happy is when I am painting” – Hunt Slonem.

A fan with her own “bunny” nails!

After the gallery session, we took the artist and some special guests out to dinner at Mission Bistro, where we enjoyed more stories and laughs, ending the night with cheesecake and tiramisu… and perhaps an after-dinner drink or two.
