 was born in Manchester, England, has lived in Malawi, Africa and Brunei, Borneo before emigrating to the US. She currently lives and works a top a 9,000’ peak in Morrison, Colorado. Winkler studied Art and Earth Science at William Paterson University and combines both subjects in her landscape and nature based artwork.

Winkler is best known for her desert and mountain geological interpretations of the American West. Her art practice involves the direct experience of walking into and documenting the landscape with observational drawing and photography. Creating miniature collage sketches with her own designed papers. Developing those sketches into large scale acrylic paintings. Geological research of specific areas assists in the visual and thematic choices that create each body of work. Winkler works experimentally with materials and tools to find textures and imagery that mimic the forces and patterns of nature that sculpt and change landscapes over time. The cut and layered aesthetic in her paintings reinforces concepts that the Earth is not a static place. That ancient landscapes can be altered through gentle erosion or by sudden cataclysmic events. She incorporates actual ground water, crushed rock and mineral from the landscape in her paintings to create moments of connection, exploration and discovery. Places like the Grand Canyon National Park and The High Uintas Wilderness are not depicted with exactness. Winkler is instead interested in creating distance between the actual place and the interpretation of it, allowing her work to exist in the abstract state between the physical world and our experience of it.

Winkler ‘s artwork has rapidly gained in acclaim and reputation and is now represented by many galleries in the US. Her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions including the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, San Luis Obispo, CA, Bakersfield Museum of Art, Bakersfield, CA, and the Cornell Art Museum, Delray Beach, FL. It has also been showcased at the LA Art Show, Art Aspen and the Jackson Hole Art Fine Art Fairs. She has been awarded several major art commissions for public and corporate collections including The Cosmopolitan Hotel of Las Vegas, Vail Health, Chevron HQ and Deer Valley Resort, Park City, UT. Her work is in private collections both nationally and internationally. Winkler was selected by the Art in Embassies Program of the US State Department to be featured in a 3-year International exhibition at the US Embassy and Ambassador’s Residence in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Winkler has also participated in an invitational exhibition at the Colorado Governor’s Residence in Denver, Colorado.

Extensive features and reviews of her work have appeared in publications such as Times UK, 

, American Art Collector Magazine, Scientific American, CREATE! and New American Paintings. MOMENT, a short documentary on Sarah by MAKING ART films, was released in 2019. Winkler has recently been named ‘ A Painter on the Rise’ in “Women Artists To Watch’ by the curators on Artsy.
