31st Annual Art & Soup Celebration at the Salt Lake Convention Center April 3 and 4, 2019.
Community Nursing Services (CNS) celebrates its 31st annual Art & Soup event at the Salt Lake Convention Center this week. Art & Soup is a fundraising event to support CNS’s delivery of charitable home health, hospice and immunization services to people throughout Utah. All proceeds of ticket sales and 35% of art sales go to the non-profit. For two days, visitors enjoy soups and desserts from 26 popular restaurants (100% of their food and time is donated) and artwork from 49 of Utah’s most celebrated and up-and-coming artists–one of which is our own Glen Hawkins.
Gallery MAR’s own Glen Hawkins is one of the 49 local artists at this year’s celebration. Glen shows his love for oil paint in landscapes, still-life and nude figures.
Wednesday evening featured a “Quick Draw” which allows artists to paint and auction their work in just a couple of hours. Glen pre-frames the work and masks it off while he paints. “That way they can handle the painting without getting oil paint all over.” One of his collectors hinted they would like one of his nudes. Glen is always open to requests.
Glen is our Harley-Davidson riding plein-air artist. He designed and built an easel box to fit on the front of his bike so he can be ready to pull over and paint, like he did last summer with this painting (lower right). Riding west of his home he saw a tractor kicking up dust last summer when lingering smoke from the California fires filled our skies. “The skies were apocalyptic,” remembers Glen.
Mark your calendar for next year’s Art & Soup. It’s easy going, and you can enjoy everything in a couple of hours. I give high marks all around for delicious food and great art–all for a very good cause.
