New Encaustic Artworks from Shawna Moore

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Montana-based Gallery MAR artist Shawna Moore is presenting a sold our workshop at the Kimball Art Center this weekend. Fling in and out of town, she was able to bring new works for exhibiting at our gallery, as we are very excited to have them here. The chain elements and calligraphy work is expanding into circles and orbits in her work, and the color in this particular series is inviting and warm. Enjoy…

“Two Waters” Run Deep at Gallery MAR

Shawna Moore and Matt Flint at Gallery MAR in Park City

This weekend, Shawna Moore and Matt Flint joined us in the gallery for the reception of their exhibition “Two Waters.”  With all of the excitement that this show has garnered from collectors and new clients, many pieces have been pre-sold; the response to the new works was uplifting to all involved.

Shawna Moore kicked off the weekend with a feature of Park City Television’s Morning Show, where she discussed her new body of work and her unique encaustic process. While many artists work with encaustic (a resurgence has recently hit the contemporary market), Moore’s techniques are exceptional and the combination of a smooth surface quality with distinct depth and layering capture collectors. It’s a rarity to have so many gallery guests inquire about the artworks– Shawna Moore’s paintings ask to be discovered.

Matt Flint drove in from Wyoming to join us for the reception. With so many symbols and icons and characters (both humans and animals) the works begged to be discussed. Each piece has its own meaning and personal connection to Matt Flint, and as his stories unfolded our gallery guests can’t help but feel more connected to the works. I sure do.

It was a joy to see that two of my favorite artists have so much in common. Aside from art talk, we discussed off-piste skiing (and ‘boarding), outdoor exploration and water-sports, goals and dreams for the future, and the importance of family.

The “Two Waters” show will hang for an additional three weeks at Gallery MAR.

Kirk Tatom, “Sunrise, Avon,” 16″ x 20″, 2009

Kirk Tatom:

Currently living in the UK (but feeling rather homesick!), Tatom recently went over to the North coast of France for the Easter holiday. He drove all over Brittany and Normandy in the cool, damp weather. “[I]could have used more warmth and sunshine… but the gray cloudy light was good for photos of the wonderful farms.” We look forward to seeing more of Tatom’s new work, from this trip, in the gallery soon.

Shawna Moore, Encaustic artist

Shawna Moore:

Moore writes to us that “this year is just slipping through my fingers!” The artist and her family spent the winter in southern Baja, Mexico camping on the beach, home schooling, doodling, tanning, windsurfing, and eating tacos. The current economic situation has turned out to be a fantastic time for her to recharge and energize her art.  Exciting happenings for Moore are her inclusion in the Montana Triennial Exhibition www.missoulaartmuseum.org and a new art grant in Montana: “The Innovative Artist’s Award.” She will also show/teach in Jackson, Wyoming the weekend of July 24-25, and will open a show in Santa Fe in late August. If that schedule wasn’t busy enough, Moore plans on teaching several workshops and another show in the fall.

Good luck to both of these artists with their busy schedules and upcoming events!

Shawna Moore, New to Gallery MAR

Shawna Moore, Montana artist

The soothing scent of beeswax is floating through the gallery and a new abstract artist’s work hangs on our walls. Welcome to encaustic artist Shawna Moore, Gallery MAR’s newest artist. An ancient art, which is believed to have been originally used in Ancient Egyptian tombs, encaustic utilizes beeswax mixed with resins and varnishes in layered effects on board or canvas. Moore paints up to 20 or even 30 layers on her boards. The wax is heated, planed and scratched, and reworked to create intriguing depth.

She is currently exploring the idea of “line”– what makes a mark, and how that is related to the past and our landscape. For Moore, making art is a quest to make sense of the world, both materially and conceptually, though the observance of nature, line, and color, and how they entwine with the flow of thought and creativity.
