Jan Perkins Summit County Fair Mural

The Summit County Fair celebrated 100 years this summer with several special commemorative events during its centennial, Aug. 1-8. Anniversary events included a centennial quilt, medallion and mural by Gallery MAR artist Jan Perkins. The county’s longtime residents, 95 years and older, served as the fair’s Grand Marshals.

This past weekend, Summit County unveiled an original mural commemorating the fair’s first 100 years, created by Oakley artist Jan Perkins. The mural will hang on the back of the grandstand, located at the entrance of the fairgrounds in Coalville, Utah.

“Jan’s iconic depiction of our rodeo, one of the most popular events at the Summit County Fair, and her excellence in artistic execution won her the commission,” said Brian Bellamy, interim county manager.

Perkins, who graduated from Utah State with a degree in painting, specializes in painting animals with an attention to anatomical detail that gives her subjects a realistic quality. Her strong interest in magazine illustrations from the early 1900s has influenced her design for the mural, which depicts home arts, horticulture, floriculture, livestock and the rodeo. Perkins was chosen to create the mural by a selection committee from the Summit County Fair Board, which reviewed the artistic submissions.

Gallery MAR artists at the Springville Museum of Art’s Annual Salon

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Our artists, Jan Perkins and Rob Colvin are currently on view at the Springville Museum of Art. In celebration of the unique and varied landscape of the west, the Springville Museum of Art has opened its new exhibit, Redrock, Sage & Pinon. The exhibit, which spans over 100 years of fine art, includes such artists as Maynard Dixon, John Fery and Alfred Lambourne, along with Gallery MAR artist Rob Colvin. Featuring the raw and untamed beauty of the Wild West, each work highlights the depth and wonder of canyons and deserts unique to Utah. With the striking contrast of the bright blue sky against the red rock, it is no wonder why artists were drawn to the National Parks and Monuments.

Jan Perkins’ piece, “Sanctuary,” was selected as one of 200 pieces in the annual Spring Salon at the Springville Musuem of Art. She has aslo recently been selected to commission a mural for the city of Oakley, Utah, for their Centennial celebration. The mural will debut during the Summit County Fair, August 1st through the 8th. The mural will be hung on the back of the grandstand at the entrance of the Summit County Fairgrounds in Coalville. “Jan’s iconic depiction of our rodeo, one of the most popular events at the Summit County Fair, and her excellence in artistic execution won her the commission,” said Brian Bellamy, Interim County Manager.

Painting in Progress– Jan Perkins at Gallery MAR

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Gallery MAR artist Jan Perkins stopped by last weekend for a painting demonstration in the gallery. The photos above, taken over a two-day time period, show the progression of Perkins’ Main Street scene. I’m very excited to see how the painting is completed. Perkins is known for her local Utah scenes, and paints with a lush, painterly palette. Watch for this piece in the upcoming “Local Fireworks” First Anniversary show on Friday, July 3rd from 6 to 9 p.m.

Congratulations go out to Perkins, who was recently chosen by the Summit County Arts Council as their mural artist for the Summit County Fair Centennial Mural Design: “Celebrating One Hundred Years”.

Jan Perkins in the Springville Museum of Art’s Spring Salon

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Very exciting news from one of our local artists, Jan Perkins. Her work “Sanctuary” was accepted into the prestigious Annual Spring Salon at the Springville Art Museum. A new work by Michael Bingham was also accepted into the annual show. If you haven’t yet been to this museum, you should. It’s a little gem here in Utah, and one of the finest little art museums in the west. They have a fantastic collection of Russian Impressionism works as well.

Here’s Jan: “I thought you’d like to know, this painting, Sanctuary, just got into the Springville Museum of Art’s Spring Salon Exhibition. They had a record breaking number of submissions, so I’m happy about getting in.”

Jan Perkins will be featured on Park CIty Television tomorrow (Friday) morning to speak about her work and also the evening’s Gallery Stroll on Main from 6 to 9 p.m.

In addition, Jan Perkins will be the featured plein air painter at the Park City 125th anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 13th on Main Street. Join us on Main for concerts and other events in celebration of 125 years of Park City living.

Art Gallery Leveled after Bozeman Blast

Jan Perkins, “Ten O’Clock in the Morning,” Oil, 5″ x 5″, 2008

Our hearts go out to the Bozeman, Montana community, Montana Trails Gallery and its staff, and all of the artists affected this week by a natural gas explostion. One person is still missing after the explosion shook downtown Bozeman early Thursday morning, destroying several businesses and prompting the shutdown of a portion of the city’s downtown. This tragedy affects thousands in Bozeman and elsewhere.

The explosion occurred at about 8:15 a.m. in the 200 block of Main Street. Crews allowed the fire to burn into the afternoon because they could not completely shut off natural gas. Several businesses were destroyed including Boodles restaurant, the Rocking R Bar, Pickle Barrel that is located in the Rocking R Bar, Montana Trails Gallery, the American Legion building and Lilly Lu’s children’s store. Bozeman is a small mountain resort town, similar to Park City

Debris was launched over a 3 block radius and, while Bozeman has calmed somewhat, work has just begun for those who will clean up and investigate the devastating natural gas explosion.

One of our Gallery MAR artists, Jan Perkins, shows with Montana Trails Gallery as do other friends of the gallery. This is a grim reminder to always manage your artwork carefully, document when your pieces are hanging, and make sure that your works are insured properly.

New Artists to Gallery MAR

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Since our opening nearly 6 weeks ago, we have added to our exhibiting artists list. Five new artists from all of the country have joined us.

Allow me to make the introduction…

Debbie Fowler grew up in Idaho and began her painting career 15 years ago. She has painted professionally and exhibited in galleries since 1997, and has studied and worked with renowned Utah artists such as Ovanis Berberian, Larry Wade, George Allen, Ann Marie Oborn, and Diane Turner. Her lush and vibrant floral scenes and landscapes showcase the best views in the west.

Allan Mardon lives in Arizona, and is inspired by the graphic beauty and history of his new surroundings. After moving here from Canada, he began to approach his canvas in an entirely different way, embarking upon a series of paintings with Native American themes. Employing a primitive and narrative style, these works depict in historic detail the artifacts and beauty of indigenous cultures of bygone times. Mardon’s paintings can be found in galleries and museums throughout the country as well as extensive public, corporate and private collections in the United States and abroad.

Fran Nicholson is our new sculptor from New Mexico. Her current body of work is all about dogs doing what they do best – living in the moment, unselfconsciously, and at peace being themselves. These virtues, which come so naturally to dogs, are often life-long goals for their human companions. Luckily for us, dogs are brilliant teachers. Nicholson says, “My second series consists of bronze dogs in relation to cubes, like the props used in formal photo shoots. True to their nature, these dogs would rather skip the formal poses and just climb down. Maybe roll over for a belly rub, or sit and scratch an itchy spot. So they do, and so I sculpt them.”

Jan Perkins graduated with a degree in painting and illustration from Utah State University in 1985. Since then Jan has worked as an illustrator and more recently as a landscape and wildlife artist. She has a vast interest in life and this is reflected in her variety of created work. She has painted Greek ceiling paintings, award winning portraits of musicians in the Utah Symphony, children’s portraits, landscapes for Utah ski resorts, fashion illustration, and paintings of show and race horses. She is currently exploring and expressing as much as possible the heart and soul within via the beauty of wild lands, nature, and light. Her work is influenced by James Reynolds, Dan McCaw, Putt, Sargent, Levitan, Phillip Goodwin, Sorolla and Vouillard.

Mary Scrimgeour began painting full time in 1990. Her worldwide travels continue to enhance and nourish her work. Mary interprets the world by painting what she sees and feels. Her love of children, a sense of humor, and a compassion for people are some of the emotions she blends with her vision. She majored in fine arts at the University of Colorado and has taken numerous classes with prominent Colorado artists. For many years Mary worked as an art director for several national magazines; during this time she continued her artwork independently. In 1985 she designed her own line of women’s clothing for her designer clothing store in Boulder, Colorado.
