Presenting New Oil Painter Kirk Tatom

Kirk Tatom
Fresh and distinctive artworks by a regional artistAfter searching for months to try to locate this elusive artist, I took a day trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico. As luck would have it I met Tatom in a gallery there and left him with my card. It must have been fate. Tatom is now a Gallery MAR artist.

New Mexico artist Kirk Tatom is noted for painting the lush green fields and farms of this country. He gravitates toward rural landscapes with their cows, sheep, and natural beauty. In the beginning he strongly identified what he thought of as a “useful” landscape, rich with agricultural resources. He is featured in the collections of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Museum of South Texas, among others.

The preparation of his panels requires just the right placing of texture exactly where it belongs. The surface may be sanded, scraped, polished and scored, then washed, stained, and glazed. Then comes the march of the elements of landscape: a boat, a vineyard, trees, animals. Tatom often has as many as ten paintings in the works at one time. Unlike most painters he starts a group of paintings at one time and finishes them all at the same time. Just as Tatom pays great attention to the craft of his landscape paintings, he heightens their impact with exquisitely hand carved, gold leafed frames built by his father and brother.

Congratulations to Kathy Lofft. Just today she got the endorsement from Utah’s second most powerful public executive (after the Governor): Peter Corroon, Salt Lake County’s Mayor. Spread the word and visit her website at www.VoteLofft.com. Lofft’s fund raising event on Monday night was a great success. Thank you to her campaign contributers for donating so generously, to Done to Your Taste Catering for the fantastic food, and everyone who helped to set up and support Lofft’s race for House Seat 53.

2008 Park City Kimball Arts Festival a Hit
August 6, 2008

What a fantastic weekend for our Park City art community! Many thanks to our local artist Brooks Yates for coming by the gallery to paint here and delight our guests. This weekend was incredibly hot (both the temperature and the art!) and packed to gills every day with festival-goers. Friday night was the best night by far, in my opinion, with locals streaming through and picking up artistic goodies to add to their collections.

Favorites of the 225 artist? Salt Lake painter Erin Berrett and Seattleite Brian McGuffey. Congratulations to the Kimball Art Center on their very successful annual auction on Thursday night and the popularity of the festival on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

I am thrilled to be able to share Gallery MAR’s internet space with you and I encourage your feedback and insight into the world of fine art! Who knows? Maybe your art expertise, latest collecting story, or details on your own collection will be in our next blog! Email info@GalleryMAR anytime with your feedback, inspiration, and ideas. See Him in the City”: Aaron Memmott Paints the Town
I saw him on Main Street, early one morning last month. Painting with quick little strokes, he took in the morning light on Main and transferred it to the canvas with an added dose of energy. I struck up a conversation. Later, I met his girlfriend of seven years, Penelope Moore, who came in to see the space. A few weeks later, I’m proud to say that both of their works are hanging in Gallery MAR.

Aaron Memmott - Main Street Glow

Aaron Memmott “Main Street Glow” 18″ x 24″ Oil

Aaron Memmott studied Fine Art at the University of Utah, where he trained under some widely acclaimed Utah artists including David Dornan and Paul Davis. He received his BFA from Utah and went on to get his MFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. After teaching at the Academy of Art University for several years Memmott took a new teaching position at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia where his local surroundings continue to be a source of inspiration for his work.

Just a few weeks ago, Memmot and Moore decided to pack it all in and move from Savannah to Park City, Utah to allow their creative spirits and talents to grow.

Memmott is influenced most by twentieth century American painters such as Richard Diebenkorn, Wayne Thiebaud, and Edward Hopper. Thomas Hart Benton, another inspiration, is Memmott’s cousin.
