Dear Maren,
I don’t know about you, but I am already getting geared up for this holiday season. All of this fresh snow and sweater-weather puts me in the mood to celebrate! I’m looking forward to our wine and cheese pairing party in December, and hope to have you join us for this very special, private kick-off to winter. There are more exciting events to follow…

Did you know that there is only one spot in Park City where you can find professional art supplies? It’s true: Gallery MAR features starter kits and basic supplies and surfaces for all budding artists as well as the seasoned professional. Call the gallery or come by to see our selection. Our own Kimball Art Center offers art classes for further inspiration.

This month brings us a fantastic new artist, whose work is in my own personal collection: Michael Kessler. See the article below for more information, and find out why I just had to have his work.

And in the news, two of our local artists, Penelope Moore and Aaron Memmott, were featured in this Park Record article. Learn more about these traveling artists here.

Kind regards,

Maren Bargreen

Presenting New Artist Michael Kessler

Michael Kessler,
Nature-based Abstraction

It’s not easy to decipher why we are attracted to an abstract work. Is it the pallet? The movement in the piece? Do we see alternate messages or symbolism in the composition? Or is it an unspoken connection, a visceral longing for the work?

When I first saw Michael Kessler’s abstract acylic paintings, I knew I had to have them. His work is inspired by nature and the play between our planet’s order and chaos. Guests in my home comment on the works and ask where they can find them. The new answer? Gallery MAR.

Kessler uses earth tones and natural elements as his inspiration, such as a foggy sky, oceans and water, mountains and valleys. Nature assists and inpires him as he builds up layers, sometimes up to one hundred, to complete each piece. Handmade tools allow him to push and pull the paint across his pieces, creating a process that mimics nature.

“I’m building a surface, ” Kessler explained. “And not so much an image. I see my work as a metaphor for nature– about wondering how it (nature) got that way, realizing that we may never find out. I’m interested in beauty, but not a superficial or superfluous beauty– something deeper.” He is a painter of our time, having orchestrated his own process and found his own distinct voice, in his own words, “Romantic Geometry.”

Bridge Academy Opening in Provo
October 10th, 2008

I had a difficult time finding parking, and I’ll admit to finally coming to stop in a “No Parking at Any Time” spot. The sign was faded and bent a bit, so I figured it didn’t carry as much weight. Bad parking Karma aside, the opening of the Bridge Academy was quite an art party. And their own sign is bright, loud and clear: “Bridge Academy.”

Artists, students, gallery owners, and locals squeezed into the spacious, three-story building last night at 146 W. 600 S. in Provo, Utah. Throughout the building, artists stood painting and drawing at easels and chatting with guests. There are many nooks and interesting spaces in the building, and you can tell that the renovations have been extensive. It was inspiring to see how excited the Academy’s founders were as they greeted everyone warmly with hugs and gave tours throughout the building….
