New works by Michael Kessler

Monday, February 28th, 2011

We just received ten new paintings from New Mexico-based artist Michael Kessler. A personal favorite of mine, Michael Kessler paints in layers of acrylic with a high gloss resin topping the abstracted landscapes. Although the images below are gorgeous, the pieces in person are a site to behold. Please stop by the Park Ciy gallery soon to enjoy these masterful works yourself.

Arts Kids Steps up to the Plate!

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Above, take a peek at the photos from the annual “Step Up to the Plate” Fundraiser for Arts Kids,  a youth development program using expressive arts and group techniques to serve at-risk youth. Gallery MAR was very proud to help sponsor this event, which was heads above their previous years’. Delicious food from 8 Park City chefs and dessert from the head pastry chef at the Montage Deer Valley made for a delightful and delicious evening. Fine Art Consultant Jennifer Carr (who volunteers as their Event Coordinator) was key to the success of the evening’s fund raising performance.

A little history on the program:

Arts-Kids Has Served 4000 Children Since 1999. Arts-Kids was founded in 1999 at two schools in Park City, Utah, by Pat Drewry Sanger, an Advanced Practice Psychiatric-Mental Health Registered Nurse and Child/Adolescent Specialist.

The inspiration for the program came from her early work in Norfolk, Virginia. She noticed that children growing up in tough inner city environments began to become hardened and emotionally shut down by age nine or ten. Parents were often too burned-out from their efforts to survive. They had no energy to support their children on an emotional level.

She transferred that learning to develop an initial program, using the expressive arts and group techniques to create a joyful environment for self-expression. The program grew over the years to help children cope with the inevitable social problems kids encounter at school – teasing, bullying, feelings of low self esteem – and to help students with behavioral challenges such as ADHD, autism and Asperger’s.

The purposes of Arts Kids is as follows:

  • To build communication, problem solving, listening and social skills.
  • Foster confidence and self-esteem.
  • Provide a non-competitive, creative environment.
  • Promote empathy among diverse populations, ages 8-17.
  • Build positive relationships with adult role models.
  • Balance individuality with a sense of global community.
  • Use the creative part of brain to enhance intellect.
  • Be a joyful place to experience the freedom of self.

The event offers a unique opportunity for culinary and wine connoisseurs, vintners, chefs, and skiers from across the country to mingle in an extraordinary setting. The weekend is made up of a variety of wine tastings, vintner dinners hosted at private homes in Park City and Deer Valley, three ski days at three different local resorts, and culminates with a gala dinner and auction. Support ARTS-KIDS Annual Celebration & Fundraiser

Park City, UT—“Step Up to the Plate,” Arts-Kids’ annual fundraiser will be held on Sunday, February 27 from 6 to 9 pm at the Newpark Resort Hotel. The event unites chefs from eight Park City restaurants in friendly culinary competition. Guests will vote for the People’s Choice award and four professional food critics will name the top chef of the evening.

“Step Up to the Plate” features culinary tastings created specifically for the event by chefs from the Goldener Hirsch Inn, Shabu, Jean Louis, Butcher’s Chop House, High West Distillery, Zoom, Top Shelf, Maxwell’s and Squatters. The Montage will provide a special dessert.

Tickets are $55 in advance and $65 at the door. The ticket price includes adult beverages. A signature cocktail from the High West Distillery will be available for purchase. New this year, guests can reserve seating for $75 a ticket or purchase an entire table for groups of 8 to10 guests.

The full evening includes a presentation about the Arts-Kids program, silent auction, and live music by Rich Wyman during the cocktail hour, followed by food tastings, guest voting, and continuation of the silent auction. Wine, beer, sodas, and the signature cocktail will be available throughout the evening. The evening ends with the announcement of the winners of the culinary competition and the winners of the Silent Auction.

The Silent Auction includes ski tickets, gift certificates to restaurants, retail stores, the Park City School of Wine, artwork from local artists, and much, much more.

Proceeds from the event and Silent Auction benefit Arts-Kids, an after school program using the expressive arts and group techniques to enhance youth development and build community. Professional artists provide experiences in the visual arts, music, drama and movement. Just as a student on an athletic team builds confidence and skills, success in art builds self-esteem through improved communications and problem-solving skills and the joy of belonging to a fun group.
